6th grade literature students celebrated the written word today through an Icelandic tradition known as Jólabókaflóð (Book Flood). This tradition originated during the post-World War II era when many nations, such as Iceland, isolated themselves to rebuild their own economies. Many imports were limited at that time; however, there were less restrictions applied to paper goods. Paper was readily available and used in the publication process of books across Iceland. During the 1944 holiday season, a catalog was distributed to households featuring a list of all titles published in Iceland that year. This inspired many Icelanders to purchase books and give them as gifts. The tradition has endured, and the act of giving books as Christmas gifts remains popular in Iceland today. Additionally, as a result of this literary gift giving practice, many Icelandic people spend Christmas Eve reading books and enjoying chocolaty treats. For our 6th Grade Book Flood Celebration, students brought in books to exchange, made bookmarks, and enjoyed some tasty treats while reading their new books. A great time was had by all!
