The Faculty and Staff are pleased to announce that Ellis Hughes has been selected as the Student of the Month for April 2025. Ellis is the daughter of Elizabeth Hughes of Taylor Ridge and is a senior at Rockridge High School.
Ellis reports that Sociology with Mrs. Neece is her favorite class this year. She played Volleyball all four years for Rockridge and is also active as the secretary of the National Honor Society and is the Student Council President. Outside of school, Ellis volunteers at Ridgewood Elementary School and the QC Paws Animal Shelter. She coaches volleyball at the Iowa Select Volleyball Club and enjoys sewing & crocheting in her free time.
Rockridge High School Staff had the following comments to support Ellis’s selection as Student of the Month:
Chemistry Teacher Mrs. Heidi Nerud said, “Ellis is an amazing individual who carefully makes her own decisions and judgements in every situation with kindness. She also applies this level of decision-making to her academics which sets her apart from many of her peers. In advanced chemistry she applied this level of problem-solving to every problem she encountered and was able to translate it in a way that others in the class were able to understand which shows strong leadership skills. I am confident she will excel in any career she chooses. A great choice for SOM!”
Counselor Mrs. Anne Bohnsack stated, “Ellis is not only intelligent, but she is so kind as well. She is always looking out for others, whether she knows them or not. She is the first to come to someone's defense who needs support. She is justice driven yet very compassionate to all she encounters. Ellis would give the shirt off of her back to others if she could. She is always willing to lend a helping hand, and does so with a beautiful smile on her face. She is a fiercely loyal yet wildly fun friend. Outside of her phenomenal character, Ellis is also a bright student. She naturally is gifted in school, and has a deep understanding of her work, even in advanced, rigorous classes. I have no doubt that Ellis will make a positive, lasting impact on this world once she graduates in May.”
Spanish Teacher Mr. David Stroud added, “This recognition, I feel, is well-deserved by what I have observed in my Spanish IV classroom and beyond. Her inquisitive mind and hard work and drive have enabled her to maintain an A-plus average in Spanish. Her other outstanding works and leadership are seen on the Volleyball team, in National Honor Society and as President of our Student Council. These accomplishments, along with Ellis’ positive attitude, drive to succeed and willingness to go above and beyond to help her fellow students make her a most worthy candidate.”
Social Studies Teacher Mrs. Brandee Neece said, “Ellis is a wonderful, hard-working student within the classroom. Her kind heart makes her constantly concerned and invested in the people around her whether they be her core group of friends or general acquaintances. Her gentle personality makes her very easy to get along with. She is a consistent icon of the Rocket Closet ensuring that the food bags are packed every week and distributed properly because she wants to fulfill the needs of those students within our community. As president of Student Council, Ellis worked diligently in the collection of food for the Rockridge Community Food Pantry and the Milan Food Pantry as well.”
Student Council Sponsor Mrs. Lindsay Reed stated, “Ellis Hughes, our Student Council President, is a responsible, kind, and intelligent leader. She is deeply committed to helping others and always strives to make a positive difference in our school. Ellis leads by example, inspiring her peers through her actions and dedication. Her thoughtfulness and drive make her a true role model for all. I have no doubt that she will go on to do great things in the future.”
After high school Ellis plans to attend Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. She plans to major in Accounting and eventually wants to become a Project Manager.
